This morning as I read my Bible and think about the way people in those days lived, I am astonished by how thankful they were. I am also hit with the reality of just how spoiled we are these days. Even the poorest of poor lives better than the kings in the days of old. Recently we’ve had a couple of power outages and we were all going crazy without electricity. We can barely function without it. Yet, we never realize how lucky we are to have it, until we don’t.
I have so much yet I still want more. I have a house with a roof, a floor, no draft, plenty of room for all of our things. I have heat, and air conditioning. I have a refrigerator to keep my food from spoiling. A stove to cook my food properly. I can go to a grocery store and buy my food instead of going out to kill it or pick it. We have Beds with pillows and blankets. Indoor plumbing. I can take a shower, use the bathroom, wash my dishes. We have electricity and lights. We can see in the dark just by a flip of a switch. We have televisions, game consoles, phones, computers and plenty of modern technology.
Yet I want more. I want a bigger house with a garage, a den and atleast 2 bathrooms. I want laundry upstairs where it is easily accessible. I want a walk in closet. I want nice furnishings and all of the high end finishes. I want a separate dining room, a brand new dishwasher, a convection oven. I want more. My home doesn’t please me. It could be so much nicer than it is. My kids and I have clothes to wear. I want them to have name brand nice clothes like all the popular kids have. We have two ok cars but I want a brand new quad cab Dodge Ram. My husband and I both have decent jobs but I want better jobs that pay more and are less stressful. I want to take nice vacations every year. I want to be able to go out to nice restaurants every week. I want to pay my bills without worrying about having enough left to buy groceries and get the kids all the extras. I want want want want. We all do and the thing is, none of the things we want have the power to make us happy. Once we get everything we want, we will still want more.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting more or wanting to better yourself. The problem is when we make these things we want our number one priority. We forget to thank God for everything we already have and we let not having what we want control us and make us unhappy. We start worshipping money and material things instead of God. We stop giving our time to God because we are too busy giving our time to chasing all of the things we want. We stop spending time with our children and enjoying the time we have with them because we are too busy trying to give them material things. What they really need is for us to be there, to love them, to listen to them.
Everything we have is a blessing yet we aren’t satisfied! This is a big problem I have myself. I’m praying for God to help me with this. To give me a heart that wants more of him instead of more of the world. I want to be satisfied and filled with God. I want to be spiritually content. I don’t need more of the world. I need more of God. As I say this prayer these verses come to mind:
Matthew 6:33 But Seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you.
He takes care of me. All of my needs will be provided by God. I need to stop scrambling to control everything. I shouldn’t be so consumed with my job, my money, where I’m going to eat out,and all the material things I want. I should be seeking Him first and everything else will be added to me.
That doesn’t mean if I serve God he’s gonna give me a brand new car, a brand new house and all the things I want. It means he’s going to take care of me. He knows what I need more than I could ever understand. If I’m seeking his kingdom first, I’m going to be content because I’m seeking him. Nothing can fill the empty space like God.
Earlier in the same chapter says:
Matthew 6:19, 20 &21
19)Lay up not treasures on earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20) But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and wgeee thieves do not breaks through nor steal:
21) For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Everything we have here is going to go away. It won’t last. People can steal your material things. The value of it decreases with time. We will die and it will all turn back to dust. We can’t take our things with us. It will all fade away. We should be investing more into our eternal future with God instead of temporary items here on earth.
God doesn’t ask for much in return for all that he has done for us. He wants us to love him. If we are so busy spending all of our money and time on things we aren’t spending much time with him. We aren’t relying on him. We aren’t living for him. We are living for the things of this world and the things of this world can never satisfy us. We will always want more. If we focus on Him and store up treasures in heaven our hearts will be full.
It’s ok to enjoy the material things of this world if we are able to have them but they should never come before God. We shouldn’t be exhausting ourselves to be able to afford the new whatever it is. We shouldn’t be stressing about having money for this or that new thing.
We shouldn’t spend all of our money on the things we want and putting whatever is left over in the offering plate. We should be giving to God first. He is the reason you have that job that keeps the lights on. It’s not only about money. What God wants more than our money, is our time. It’s not just sitting in church on Sunday morning. We should be putting our feet to the pavement to spread his word EVERYDAY. We should be out there doing His work everyday not just on Sunday. We should praise him in everything we do. We should consider him in everything we do. We should Thank him for all that we have. If we find ourselves still wanting more, we should pray to want more of Him! We should seek more of him instead of seeking the things of this world. He is the only thing that will ever fill that More that we are after.
